Which only proves that AFL edict is malarkey, and they chase the dollar. The FMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00119761964589349965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932408536664759389.post-35718043640434836992013-01-18T11:24:54.766+11:002013-01-18T11:24:54.766+11:00Gigs, spot on with your points about prime time be...Gigs, spot on with your points about prime time being earned and the flow on from that. Except only clubs like Footscray/North etc. have to earn it. Essendon and Carlton don't deserve it at the moment, but you can lock in ANZAC day, Dreamtime and a swag of Friday nights for sure.

Great piece by the way Mr.InstituteAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932408536664759389.post-46072737006565733292013-01-17T21:58:21.231+11:002013-01-17T21:58:21.231+11:00Thanks Gigs...

The ALF carrot (if good enough you get the prime gig) is a mirage.

Time is now for the AFL to act. Te review must recommend some root and branch reform.
Otherwise we will be watching EPL-style AFL, where only the few can win the flag. The FMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00119761964589349965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932408536664759389.post-27419617029996994742013-01-17T12:51:30.592+11:002013-01-17T12:51:30.592+11:00Have the AFL already made the move back to Darwini...Have the AFL already made the move back to Darwinism? They've declared that from now on, marquee time slots (Friday nights etc) must be "earned" via good performances. Hence no Friday night games for the Bulldogs in 2013.

That will mean less exposure, leading to less supporters and members, and consequently less income, giving them less ability to compete with cashed-up clubs who can use the latest sports science, equipment, hi-tech guernseys (not sure if that'll actually make a difference), support staff etc.

Presumably that will translate to a better on-field performance and clubs like Footscray winning even less games, thus failing to "earn" a prime-time slot.

Vicious cycle anyone?

Gigshttp://australianfootball.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932408536664759389.post-77026984698441151792013-01-16T09:07:30.900+11:002013-01-16T09:07:30.900+11:00Thanks Troy.

The 30's were about 20 points per game under that of the 80's (~10%), but had about 60% less blowouts... indicating free-flowing, high scoring, even football matches.

Also, if you look at the second chart (73-2011), the average total score per game actually trends down as the winning margin 'gulf' opens up.
An indicator the the losing teams were playing significantly worse football than previous decades? Possibly. The FMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00119761964589349965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932408536664759389.post-73375507946420420272013-01-16T08:46:34.317+11:002013-01-16T08:46:34.317+11:00The 70s to early 90s was also the peak in scoring ...The 70s to early 90s was also the peak in scoring though wasn't it? That might explain part of the increase in large margins. Nevertheless, the point that lack of off-field success has been associated with lack of on-field success would still seem to stand. (Pretty impressive range of graphs.)Troy Wheatleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13021214034890190625noreply@blogger.com
